Treyarch Confirms Return of Controversial Last Stand Perk as Morphine Injector in Black Ops 6
Treyarch Studios, the developer behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, has announced the return of the Last Stand perk, a controversial feature that hasn’t appeared in the franchise’s multiplayer since 2009's Modern Warfare 2. While the revival of this perk has disappointed some fans, it will no longer function as a traditional perk; instead, it has been reimagined as a field upgrade called the Morphine Injector. With the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 just days away, Treyarch and Activision have been releasing daily blog posts filled with insights about the upcoming shooter. On October 18, they provided an extensive breakdown of the game's weapons, perks, equipment, scorestreaks, and more, unveiling the return of classic weapons like the XM4 and introducing new scorestreaks, including the A.G.R. Mk1, a remotely controlled assault tank equipped with a machine gun and grenade launcher.
While Treyarch had previously shared the extensive list of multiplayer perks, they have now detailed the game's field upgrades. Notably, the iconic yet highly debated Modern Warfare 2 perk, Last Stand, will return as a field upgrade known as Morphine Injector. According to a recent blog post, players will unlock this field upgrade at level 44, allowing them to enter a Last Stand state when they sustain fatal damage. Teammates will be able to revive the downed player, or the player can secure a kill to self-revive. Although not explicitly stated, it’s likely that players will start with a default pistol while in this downed state, similar to the original Last Stand.
Black Ops 6 is implementing significant changes to the series, but the return of Last Stand in the form of a field upgrade has met with mixed reactions from fans. Reddit user Potential_Owl7825 expressed hope that the Morphine Injector will have "an insanely long charge-up time" and suggested it should only be usable twice per match. Another user, OhMyTummyHurts, remarked that Last Stand "was removed for good reason," calling its return "an L."
This isn't the first instance of fan dissatisfaction with a field upgrade in the game. After participating in the beta weekends earlier this year, players quickly voiced concerns over the Sleeper Agent upgrade, which allows players to infiltrate the enemy team and appear as a friendly for a limited time. Many fans requested that this feature be changed to a scorestreak, but Treyarch's latest blog post confirms it will remain unchanged for launch.
